Explore the local area
Caedmon House is located on the East Cliff near the incredible Whitby Abbey. To get to the property, you pass through the grounds of the beautiful Grade II listed Abbey House, which was originally a monastic building until it was granted to the Cholmley family in 1541. You’ll be amongst plenty of history. Whitby Abbey was originally a 7th-century monastery and it even went on to inspire Bram Stoker’s famous gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
Below, the East side of town is full of narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques, pubs and fish restaurants. Head over the swing bridge which sits over the River Esk and you’ll find yourself on the West side of Whitby. Continue to Pier Road and you’ll find more cosy pubs and restaurants as well as fun arcades. Continue along the lively road until you reach the beautiful, blue flag West Cliff Beach which is lined with idyllic beach huts.
The centre of Whitby is a short ten-minute walk from Caedmon House.
Whitby train station half a mile away on foot so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail. There’s also a taxi rank in close proximity to the train station.
There are plenty of bus routes throughout Whitby. Hop on the X4 and you can visit beautiful coastal villages like Sandsend, Runswick Bay and Staithes. The X93 travels along the coast to Scarborough. The 95 route features plenty of quaint villages, such as Grosmont and Lealholm.
Dog friendly beaches
Whitby
The popular seaside town of Whitby is really dog friendly! The smaller Harbour (Tate Hill) beach allows dogs all year on the lead. Just before the end of the colourful beach huts, there are a set of steps from the promenade to the beach – to the left is dog friendly and there are signs displaying this.
Part of the beach on the other side of the West Pier (West Cliff Beach) is off limits to dogs during the period May 1st until September 30th. Luckily the beach is so big though that there’s still a huge area for your walk. One important note is that at high tide, this part of the beach is under water so we recommend checking the tides and going 2 hour 30 minutes after high tide until 2 hour 30 minutes before the next high tide. You’ll be able to walk all the way to Sandsend at low tide but please watch out as the tide does come in quickly.
Beaches further afield:
- Saltburn
- Staithes
- Runswick Bay
- Sandsend
Dog friendly walks
Step outside of Whitby and you’ll uncover a haven of woodland and moorland. Whitby forms part of the North York Moors National Park so it’s the perfect place for long walks.
Dog friendly pubs
Whitby Brewery started as a microbrewery back in 2013 with the aim of bringing local, craft ale back to Whitby. They certainly did just that! You’ll see their ales throughout Whitby as well as neighbouring towns and villages on the coast. Keep an eye out for them – they include the Abbey Blonde, Whitby Whaler, Jet Black, Saltwick Nab, IPA and Smugger’s Gold.
Today Whitby Brewery is a converted barn in the shadow of Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff. You can enjoy a drink at the brewery and they even offer 45 minute tours where you can find out more about the brewing process, the ingredients and sample 3 of the ales at the bar afterwards. Unfortunately the tours aren’t running at the moment due to Covid-19 but they hope to return for 2022.
The Black Horse is a traditional pub serving cask ales, craft beers, gin, rum and wine. Ultra cosy and traditional, the pub dates back to the 1800s so it has stood as a prominent figure throughout Whitby’s history.
The Black Horse also has it’s own ‘Yapas Menu’ (that’s Yorkshire Tapas to you and me) so you can have a bite to eat during your visit. We’d recommend their Yorkshire Cheese Board with a bottle of wine or Barnard’s of Fylingthorpe pork pies with homemade chutney.
Dog friendly restaurants
Abbey Wharf is a stylish restaurant overlooking the harbour and out towards Whitby’s East and West Piers. There is a balcony where you can sit outside and an upstairs mezzanine level which hosts private parties and functions.
There are lots of delicious options on the menu at Abbey Wharf! From seafood dishes to steaks, vegetarian options to gluten free meals – there is something for everyone. If you like seafood, we’d recommend the Whitby crab or the mussel pot. They also have a takeaway which is open from 12pm every day so if you’d like food to go, you can pop by for collection.
Abbey Wharf also has a bar serving a wide selection of drinks so if you don’t fancy having a meal, you can enjoy a sociable beverage instead. Their bar is stocked with traditional beers, wines, spirits and champagne. You can also enjoy a freshly ground coffee, hot chocolate or cup of tea if you’d prefer.
The Star Inn The Harbour is a beautiful restaurant on the West Cliff close to the swing bridge over the River Esk. Opened in June 2017, the restaurant celebrated its first birthday with its first industry award – an AA Rosette. It serves catch of the day fish and meat specials as well as a seasonal all day menu.
If you’re looking for a real treat, we’d go for The Star Inn The Harbour Shellfish Platter which includes dressed white crab, shetland mussels, peeled prawns, crevettes, oysters, oak-smoked salmon, whitebait goujons served with Marie Rose sauce, shallot vinegar, lemon, bread and butter… The perfect celebration meal or date night for two!
Well-behaved dogs are welcome on the tables within the allocated wooden floored area.
Dog friendly cafes
One of our favourite spots in Whitby is The Whitby Deli on Flowergate. Serving the best coffee, freshly baked goods and locally sourced produce, this small family-run business is a firm favourite amongst both locals and visitors.
We love their deli counter which is packed with cheeses, fresh meats, chutneys, pies, pastries and jams. They also stock pre-packed olives, peppers, capers and antipasti products so if you fancy a night in with lots of nibbles, you must stop by The Whitby Deli and stock up on goodies!
Rusty Shears is a real hidden gem in Whitby and one of our favourites! This vintage style cafe serves speciality teas and coffees along with home made food and cakes. Serving breakfast and lunch, we’d definitely recommend a visit during your stay.
Choose something from their specials board and you won’t be disappointed! We like their flatbreads and sarnies best for a light lunch. If you fancy a tipple, their menu has over 150 gins plus wines and craft beer too.
Java on Flowergate is a cosy cafe serving coffees, homemade cakes and tasty light lunches.
When the sun is shining, we love their mezze platter. For coffee lovers, we’d recommend trying one of their iced lattes.
On colder days, nothing beats tucking into their Indian curry bowl or their mac and cheese.
