Explore the local area
If you’re looking for a relaxing break, you’ll get the best of both worlds when staying at Egton. If you’re looking to eat out or enjoy a quiet drink, there are two public houses in Egton – the Wheatsheaf and the Horseshoe.
Egton is located just six miles from the seaside town of Whitby on the North Yorkshire coast. Popular for its Blue Flag West Cliff beach and promenade, the whole family can enjoy a day on the golden sands. Head to Pier Road, you’ll find fun arcades and plenty of fish restaurants where you can sample the catch of the day.
The other side of Whitby is full of narrow, medieval streets dotted with boutiques and pubs. Climb the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. You can also discover the renowned ruined Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s gothic novel ‘Dracula’.
Northern Rail operates a train from Egton to Whitby 5 times a day. Tickets cost £3 – £7 and the journey takes 22 min. Alternatively, Arriva North East operates a bus from Egton Bridge, Egton Manor to Whitby, St Hildas Terrace 3 times a day, and the journey takes 40 min.
By car the journey from Egton to Whitby takes approximately 12 minutes along the A171.
Whitby train station is in the centre of Whitby so villages and towns along the North Yorkshire coast can easily be reached via rail.
Dog friendly beaches
Whitby
The popular seaside town of Whitby is only a few miles away and really dog friendly! The smaller Harbour (Tate Hill) beach allows dogs all year on the lead. Just before the end of the colourful beach huts, there are a set of steps from the promenade to the beach – to the left is dog friendly and there are signs displaying this.
Part of the beach on the other side of the West Pier (West Cliff Beach) is off limits to dogs during the period May 1st until September 30th. Luckily the beach is so big though that there’s still a huge area for your walk. One important note is that at high tide, this part of the beach is under water so we recommend checking the tides and going 2 hour 30 minutes after high tide until 2 hour 30 minutes before the next high tide. You’ll be able to walk all the way to Sandsend at low tide but please watch out as the tide does come in quickly.
Beaches a little further afield:
- Saltburn
- Markse Sands Beach
- Staithes
- Runswick Bay
- Sandsend
Dog friendly walks
